Hi,

how do I stop certain programmes from starting every time I start my pc and putting an icon on the bottom right of the task bar.
The ones in question are O2 BB assistant,Dell Support Center and Google Desktop.

I only use these from time to time so I can't see the point in having them start every time I power up the pc.

I am using Vista Home Premium

Hi Unc, I use Win Patrol to control them. You can choose for yourself which programmes start when you boot up, and it is very easy to use

Thanks Anne.

Is there not something in Vista that does the same thing?

Hello Unc.

Start > Run > type 'msconfig' in the run box > Enter

On the Startup tab, take the tick out of the box for any you don't want running.

When you next start, you will get a warning, tick the box to 'don't tell me again' and click on OK. The programs you disabled should not be running after the restart.

I found some of the programmes (Windows Messenger is a prime example) jus reinstalled themselves in the start up menu the first time they were run. Win Patrol tells you they are doing it and lets you stop them

Just followed your instruction Accordion. All the programmes are there except the O2 broadband assistant.
Why wouldn't it be there if its on the task bar.
I have also got a shortcut icon on my desk top with the little administrator shield in the corner.
The file is

C:\program files \O2\agent\bin\bcon.exe.

Some times you need to go to the programs themselves,to turn off the start with windows option.
msconfig does stop them first time but like what has been said some reattach when run.
Mike Lin's start up monitor is a helpful little app.
It tells you when things are attaching to the start up menu.

"StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents annoying programs from registering themselves behind your back"
