Default Free video editing software?

Hi, can anyone recommend a half decent video editing prog that is not only free but will help me do simple editing tasks. I am importing vids from mobile phones, in both 3gp and mp4 formats. They are not the highest quality, but I would like to be able to eliminate at least some of the graininess, add brightness, rotate, decrease colour. I'm not expecting Hollywood grade results, just something a little cleaner/sharper.

Cheers, Mark

Just to add to jaymac's advice, this converter is a very handy tool to have:

For a free editor, VirtualDub is a good choice:
