You haven't done anything, if your default browser is IE you will be offered the WU. Firefox users won't be offered the choice as they have already made the choice not to use IE.
So in essence if you are happy using IE you don't need the update, and if you are happy using another browser you won't be offered the update. |

I had this in the High Prioity Updates
Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002) Date last published: 2/23/2010 Download size: 559 KB Install this update to access a Choice Screen which lets you select whether and which Web browser(s) to install in addition to Internet Explorer. After you have installed this software update it cannot be removed. While Financial Systems were collapsing all round the world the EU was concerned about MS embedding IE with their OS.

Yep you've done right Zoe. I also refused to install that update. I don't need MS 'giving me permission' to use my browser of choice - which just happens to be Firefox.

I think the general advice still holds though? You don't need the update. |

This is not down to MS - it is to comply with the EU ruling.

This situation highlights the downside of having Windows Updates set at automatic.
You lose control of what is downloaded / installed on your system. When the shield appears on my Notification Area, I manually install them 2-at-a-time, rebooting each time. If there is a rogue update, I then know it's one of two, instead of maybe ten. I learned this the hard way. ![]() If I decide I don't want to download / install an update, I just hide it. This is what I have done with KB976002. Using the option "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" makes sense to me. Spit |
