Exclamation Have I Done Wong?

.
Hi

I've just had a big bunch of - Windows Updates .. Horrid Lot They Were Too!

6 - Windows Updates
However!
Noticed that only 5 of the updates were - Pre Selected - Downloaded - Installed

When my computers finally came back on after the - Restart!
Found Out The Missing Update Was - This: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8524019.stm
And it was now sitting in Windows Update - Waiting for me to... Select - Download - Install!
But Instead... I've Hid It!
On Both My Laptop and Desktop

Can't See Why I Need It!
I'm perfectly happy as I am with.. IE8 - & - Firefox
Have I Done Wrong By Not Installing It?

Thanks In Advance!

Zoe

You haven't done anything, if your default browser is IE you will be offered the WU. Firefox users won't be offered the choice as they have already made the choice not to use IE.

So in essence if you are happy using IE you don't need the update, and if you are happy using another browser you won't be offered the update.

Hi Thegreenwire

That's a Relief!

Don't know what I was imagining might happen to me

Guess I Was Scared!
That if I didn't install the update - Maybe.. IE8 - or - Firefox .. Might stop working!

Happy Now!

I had this in the High Prioity Updates

Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002)
Date last published: 2/23/2010
Download size: 559 KB
Install this update to access a Choice Screen which lets you select whether and which Web browser(s) to install in addition to Internet Explorer.
After you have installed this software update it cannot be removed.

While Financial Systems were collapsing all round the world the EU was concerned about MS embedding IE with their OS.

Not so. I have FF as my default browser, I am still being offered the Browser Choice Screen. I won't be downloading it.

Same here, Dave. I`ve hidden that particular download so it doesn`t rear it`s ugly head again.

Zoejoe, you did right - nothing to worry about.

Yep you've done right Zoe. I also refused to install that update. I don't need MS 'giving me permission' to use my browser of choice - which just happens to be Firefox.

I stand corrected. I read that the update worked as I suggested, and on my system the evidence suggested what I had read was correct. My wife uses IE and offered the update, I use Firefox and was not offered the update.

I think the general advice still holds though? You don't need the update.

This is not down to MS - it is to comply with the EU ruling.

This situation highlights the downside of having Windows Updates set at automatic.
You lose control of what is downloaded / installed on your system.

When the shield appears on my Notification Area, I manually install them 2-at-a-time, rebooting each time.
If there is a rogue update, I then know it's one of two, instead of maybe ten.
I learned this the hard way.

If I decide I don't want to download / install an update, I just hide it.
This is what I have done with KB976002.

Using the option "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" makes sense to me.
