Default "Cannot connect to server", on all attempts to update antivirus programs

I hope you can help me.
I have a computer on my workstation that will not update any antivirus or antispyware program.
I have tried, AVG, both the antivirus and the antispy, Ad Aware SE, AVAST, Spybot Search and destroy, and attempted to run a scan using antivirus.com.
In all of these programs the download of the current definitions fails, with a cannot connect to server message.

I am able to download the avast update and apply it directly from the website.

This machine has a disabled Norton security 2003, which hasn't been removed because they forgot the password. The only firewall is SP2

This is the second computer this week which has had this issue. What am I missing? Does anyone out there have a fix for an experience like this?
HELP!
Andrea

Are these machines connecting direct to the internet or are they connecting via a network/router?

No problem, use the Norton Removal Tool (symNRT)
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
.
Once Norton has completly gone, then try updating the other programs again.

Could just be busy servers and coincidence that all of them are busy.
Could also be a remnant of the Norton Security blocking the downloads.
.
For Ad Aware SE, download the defs file manually and unzip it to the AdAware program folder - ie Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip
.
You can do the same for SpyBot, download and run the includes.exe file

Hi and thanks.
I removed all traces of Norton.
The machine connects directly to the internet via a dsl modem.

While AVG cannot update at all. AVAST can pick up updates directly from the website. It still cannot update on its own, I get that cannot connect to server message. I can't imagine it's their site. The computer is always on, and it is dsl.

I want to find the issue that is preventing natural updating. So that the owner does not have to think of doing it on a daily basis.

I am pretty sure it is registry related but I don't know where.

Thanks though
Andrea

the auto update can be disabled by virus attack, it may need resetting.

also, to get the updates you need got to the Avast site and download the latest package.
http://www.avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_vps.html

the program may need reinstalling or an update, see link,
latest avast download, if needed
http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html

run all malware scans in safemode, (hold downF8 key on reboot and select safemode from screen menu) to clean system.

Yep, tried all that, to no avail. Darn it.
There were several corrupt parts on her drive, and I have finally convinced her she needs a new one with a fresh install.
So much more civilized!
Thanks

This sounds more like a malware infection reather than a hardware failure -and something a HijackThis Log would be able to identify.

Locking out Antivirus program activity is a common occurrence of late...

my pc did the same a while back. i'd scanned and F8'd the pc to death. i'd had ashampoo firewall installed for a couple of days, so decided to get rid of it just in case...it did the trick and all anti this and that behaved nicely...
